2017 sees the arrival of three new franchisees into the Autosmart International network. Andrew Hetherington in Doncaster, John Nickels in Plymouth and Andy King in Derby.
Andy, aged 38 from Ashbourne, had been working since 2003 as a Police Officer. Andy carried out various roles and has spent the last year as the Operational Lead for Derbyshire as part of a regional collaboration designing a complex IT system, whilst he enjoyed his time he felt the time was right to move on.
He tells us, “I decided to leave the police force as I wanted to start something for myself that would allow me quality family time and provide us with a decent living. I had never heard of Autosmart before, but by chance a Facebook ad popped up in my newsfeed, advertising the Derby franchise for sale so I researched the company as it sounded a very interesting and unique opportunity.
“I was very reassured when I met with Autosmart that their process of becoming a franchisee is a thorough one, with many stages for both the potential franchisee and franchisor to check compatibility. My view of franchising with Autosmart is that it’s a secure route into being your own boss, with market leading products and R&D and H&S practices already in place.
Favourite product? “It has to be Red 7 – it’s a Ph neutral wheel cleaner so it doesn’t damage surrounding surfaces or paintwork, it’s very easy to use and the demonstration gives a fantastic visual for the customer showing the product really working”.

Andrew, 44 looked at Autosmart 5 years ago, but nothing was available in his home town of Doncaster. Redundancy from his Sales Management role led him to check out our website again. He couldn’t believe his eyes when he saw the Doncaster franchise had just come on the market.
Andrew says, “I knew that I wanted to go it alone and I believed that franchising was a softer option. I did look at other franchises on the British Franchise Association website, but I loved the look of Autosmart. With no management fees, a fantastic route to market, exclusive territory and a patch right on my door step, it was a no-brainer!
“I’m a real petrol-head and have thoroughly enjoyed the product induction course that the new guys have just attended. I cannot wait to get out and provide cleaning solutions for my customers.
“Although I have only just started trading, I already feel like I am part of the Autosmart team. The start-up process took several months and during this time I have been in regular contact with Autosmart and attended several product courses”.
Favourite product? “Finish – it’s a tyre and trim dressing that gives a fantastic sheen, but I have fallen for the smell, it’s a sweet vanilla fragrance, without being overpowering”.

John, aged 40, travelled the world in the army as a Commando Trained Medic for 8 years. When he came back to the UK, he set himself up as a self-employed Gas Engineer. He fancied a change and wanted to get his work/life balance back, so that he could spend time with his wife and 3 children.
“My friend Mark, who is the Autosmart franchisee for Exeter told me about the Plymouth business opportunity. Mark does really well out of his Autosmart franchise and so I got on the phone to Autosmart to find out more.
“I’m taking over from a long-standing franchisee, Brian Marshall, who has been with the company 19 years. Brian will personally introduce me to all the 250 customers over the course of the next month. I’m really looking forward to providing these customers with a first-class service and building the business to even greater heights.
“My favourite product is Active XLS – it’s a Traffic Film Remover and where a lot of our business is made. It’s an excellent door opener into new accounts.”
